Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple Vrindavan History
Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple is the oldest temple of Vrindavan. This temple of Lord Shiva is situated in the Vrindavan region.
It is said that Shivalinga of this temple was founded by Lord Krishna's grandson Vajranabh.
It is also said that in this complex of the premises, there is a tree of Buddasa Peepal and this tree fulfills everybody's wishes, hence this tree is called Kalpvraksha.
The Shivling of Lord Shiva of this temple is known as Gopeshwar. The god of this temple is wearing a sari and in God there is all the qualities of a woman.
In the morning, devotees come to the temple and see Lord Gopeshwar. If some devotees do Jalabhishek to God, then they are anointed with some milk or honey.
It is said that after seeing the Lord in this temple, all the painful pain of the devotee ends and he experiences the bliss.
Story of Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple
A big mythological story behind the Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple is hidden. It is said that once Lord Krishna was about to create Maharas on the banks of river Yamuna in Vrindavan and there was a quiet night time at that time. Lord Shiva and his wife Mata Parvati were very keen to see this Raslila.
But on the other side, this rasila was going to be there, except for Lord Krishna alone, no other man could go. Mata Parvati got permission to see Rasali easily.
But Lord Shiva did not come in to see Rasali. In order to please Goddess Radha of this Raslali, only Lord Krishna was the Raslalite, he was about to make her friend.
When Lord Shiva refused to come in, he was very sad and frustrated. That is why they had to stay outside the gateway in Vrindavan and had to wait for Goddess Parvati.
But Lord Shiva had a strong desire to see Rasali, so he started to request Rasheshwari Devi Radha. After seeing Lord Shiva's intense desire, Vrinda Devi told him the secret to seeing Rasali. Lord Shiva was asked to take a bath in Yamuna river in Mansarovar.
At the behest of Vrinda Devi, Lord Shiva bathed in Yamuna river and after coming out of the river, he had taken the woman's body.
After this Lord Shiva got permission to see Raslila and they went inside but seeing them, Lord Krishna smiled a little over them and they named Lord Shiva as Gopeshwar.
After that Lord Krishna had entrusted him with the responsibility of staying at the gate of Rasli and allowed only those who were eligible to come in.
From that day Lord Shiva works as a protector of Vohapar Gopeshwar, and does not allow any inappropriate person to come inside. Gopeshwar does all work to protect Vrindavan and that is why later Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple was established in Vrindavan.
