Gopal Ganesh Agarkar / Gopal Ganesh Agarkar was born on 14 July 1856 in a Kohnastha Brahmin family in Tembhu village of Karad tehsil of Satara district of Maharashtra. He took his primary education from Karad (third, in English medium), and for some time worked as a clerk in the court.
In 1878, he took a B.A degree and in 1880 he took the examination of M.A. Then later all his life spent in social service.
Gopal Ganesh Agarkar Chitpavan Brahmin was a social reformer, educationist, Maharashtra's best thinker in the British Raj.
He was an associate of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak; He founded Tilak, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Mahadev Ballal Namjoshi, VS, in the formation of the construction of several educational institutions like New English School, The Deccan Education Society and Fergusson College. He was the first editor and founder of the weekly magazine Kesari and reformer of the periodical magazine. He was the second Principal of the Fergusson College and served on the post till his death from August 1892.

- In 1880 Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Tilak and Agarkar established a New English School in Pune.
- In 1881 Tilak and Agarkar launched weekly 'Kesari' in Marathi and 'Maratha' in the English language. The responsibility of the editing post of 'Kesari' came on Agarkar.
- The days are becoming more and more popular every day. In the same way, Divan Barve of Kolhapur hindered his mis-business, for that reason he had filed a defamation case against him. Barve won And Tilak - Agarkar was jailed for 101 days in 1882. They kept Bombay in a mountainous jail. At this time, Agarkar translated Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' into Marathi with the name 'Disorder Dissilit'. - Tilak in 1884 - Agarkar established Deccan Education Society of Poona. Similarly, in 1885, Fergusson College was opened in Pune from this institution.
- From Kesari and Maratha weekly, Tilak started giving more importance to social awareness. Agarkar decided to give priority to social reform. For that reason, in 1887, he resigned the post of Kesari.
- In 1888 he started his own independent weekly called 'Sudharak'. The 'reformer' was published in both English and English languages. Agarkar and Gopal Krishna Gokhale took over the responsibility of editing the English version of their Marathi version. He kept the ideas of reforming his society in a big fight with weekly reforms.
- Next, the first Principal of Fergusson College. Shi Apte died suddenly in 1892. After that Agarkar was appointed as Principal. He was at that place till the end.
