To understand that what type of questions could be asked, we should first have an idea that from where the questions can be asked. In my terminology, where the 'roots' of the questions tie. There can be following roots:
- The Detailed Application Form (OAF)
- Personal bio data
- Academic background
- Previous employments
- Optional subject
- Personal interests (hobbies)
- The current events around us.
- The candidate
- The words being used by the candidate while answering.
Types of questions:
Factual questions: They aim to test the knowledge of the candidate. Very often many 'hard facts' are also asked.
Conceptual questions: They are asked to check whether the candidate has knowledge of the basics of a particular thing, the concept on which it is based.
Analytical questions: The aim to test whether the person has the analytical abilities or not. Whether the candidate can objectively see though the various dimensions of a particular subject.
Behavioral questions: They aim at testing the behavioral characteristics of the candidate.
Situational questions: The candidate will be given some hypothetical situation and his/her views would be sought on that.
Questions related to ethics, integrity, values etc.: They are asked to check the value system of the candidate. There proportion in the Personality Test has increased lately.
Standard questions: The questions which are peculiar of a particular exam are being asked since a long time and still have a good probability of being asked.
Tricky questions: To check how the candidate reacts in a difficult situation eg. "What do you think are the criticism of the UPSC?" or "What are your weaknesses?”
Weird questions: To check how the candidate will respond in extreme hostile conditions e.g. "What is so good about this morning; the question in response to your greeting the Board with Good Morning Sir."
