Scheme of the UPSC Exam

The civil services examination is a year-long examination which comprises of 3 stages:

1   Preliminary Examination:

It has two objective type papers : General Studies paper and the Civil Services Aptitude Test. Both the papers are of 200 marks each and will be of 2 hours duration and are conducted on the same day. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers in both papers (one third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted).

2  Main Examination

It is generally conducted in the month of November/December and spans for about 5 days. It consists of nine papers (essay type) out of which two would be of the None Rank Deciding (the marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for determining the final merit). These two papers are:

  • A paper of an Indian Language to be selected by the candidate out of languages included in the Eighth Scheduled to the Constitution.
  • A paper of English.

The seven Rank Deciding papers (the marks obtained in these papers will be counted for determining the final merit):

  • Paper I : Essay
  • Paper II : General Studies – on Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.
  • Paper III : General Studieson Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations
  • Paper IV : General Studies – on Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
  • Paper V : General Studies – on Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.
  • Paper VI & VII : They will on the one optional subject chosen by the Aspirant Officer from a list of the allowed optional subjects by the UPSC.

All these seven papers will be 250 marks and for 3 hours duration each. Marks obtained in these papers will be counted for merit.

3  Personality Test :

It carries 275 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks). Marks obtained by the candidates in the Main Examination as well as the Personality Test would determine their final ranking. The number of candidates to be summoned for Personality test will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled.
