Sinhagarh is a hill fort which is located approximately 30 km southwest of Pune city of Maharashtra. Some of the available information of this fort shows that this fort was built 2000 years ago. The Sinhagad fort was first known as Kondhana, there have been many wars on this fort, especially among them the battle of Sinhagad in 1670.
After Rishi Kundinya, the Sinhagad fort was initially known as "Kondhana". In AD 1328, the emperor of Delhi, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, captured the fort from the Koli tribe, Sardar Nag Nayak.
Shivaji's father Maratha leader Shahaji Bhosale, who was the commander of Abraham Adil Shah I, was given control of the area of ​​Pune, but Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not allowed to bow before Adil Shah, therefore he decided to establish Swarajya and Adil Shah Under Sardar Siddi Amber, he used to include the Kondhana fort in his own kingdom.
In 1647, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj changed his name to Sinhagad. But in 1649, to rescue Shahaji Maharaj from the captivity of Adil Shah, he had to entrust this fort to Adil Shah.
This fort saw the attacks of the Mughals in 1662, 1663 and 1665. Through Purandar, in 1665, the fort went into the hands of the Mughal army chief "Mijarajeje Jaysing".
In 1670, together with Tanaji Malusare, Shivaji rescued it.
After Sambhaji Maharaj's death, the Mughals retrieved control of the fort. The Marathas re-captured it in 1693 under the chairmanship of "Sardar Balakwade"
Chhatrapati Rajaram took refuge in this fort during a Mughal raids on Satara, but on 3 March 1700 BC But he died in the Sinhagad fort.
In 1703, Aurangzeb won the fort, but in 1706, the fort once again went to the hands of the Marathas. Sangola, Viseaji Chapar and Pantaji Shivdev played an important role in this war.
The fort remained under Maratha rule till 1818, after which the British won it. The British took 3 months to capture this fort, they did not take so much time to win a fort in Maharashtra.
War of Sinhagarh
A lot of war was fought on Sinhagarh, one of them is a famous war, which was fought by Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj very close and knight warrior Tanaji Malusare fought back in March 1670 to get back the fort.
The fort of the fort, climbing in the night time with the help of a steep monitor called "Yashvanti", which was called Ghorpad. After this, there was a fierce battle between Tanaji, his companion and the Mughal army.
In this battle, Tanaji Malusare lost his life, but his brother "Surajji" captured the Kondana fort, which is now called Sinhagad.
On hearing the news of Tanaji Malusare's death, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj condoled the words,
“गड आला पण सिंह गेला “
In memory of Tanaji's contribution in the war, an idol of Tanaji Malusare was established in the fort.
Sinhagad fort is a popular tourist destination for many residents of Pune. The fort is also situated in the form of a memorial for Tanaji as the grave of Rajaram Chhatrapati. Tourists can see the historic gate along with the military stables, a brewery and goddess Kali (Goddess) temple, Hanuman statue on the right side of the temple.
From here, you can enjoy the majestic view of a mountain valley. Doordarshan's tower is also on Sinhagad.
This fort also acts as a training center at the National Security Academy, Khadakwasla. You can also see Khadakwasla and Varasagaon dam and Torana fort from here.
The local municipal transport service runs from "Shaniwarwada" and "Swargate" every day to Dinhage village in Sinhagad. One way of climbing from both sides of the fort is one.
