Essay on The Slum Problem - Socioeconomic Problems - 800 Words
The continuous flow of people from the villages to the cities creates many socioeconomic problems. The population density increases in cities and citizens are less than the needs. Law and order situation worsens. Prices of essential commodities touch the sky. The housing situation becomes so intense that many people are forced to live in slums or sleep on the sidewalk. Houses rent. All this leads to the creation of slums. Occasionally, these slums come between the posh colonies.
According to the 2001 census data, there are 607 cities with slums and the population living in slums is 40,297.341. Rapid urbanization and global deteriorating poverty has helped Slum population to shoot up to 923 million at the end of the century, according to a UN report. About 54 million people also live in slums in developed countries.
There are many reasons for which the people of the villages migrate to the cities and make slums. First of all, due to population explosion, cultivable land is no longer sufficient to support all the landless agricultural laborers of the villages. Rather than being hungry in the villages, they go towards the cities in search of work with their women folk. While men are appointed as unskilled construction workers, women get jobs in the form of housewives. These laborers sleep on the sidewalks. Later, they build slums, which become slums over time.
Landless laborers are also attracted to cities because there are many factories in the cities where they can get jobs as factory workers. Later, these factory workers call their relatives and friends from their villages. Cities are expanded in this manner.
The spread of education in the villages is also responsible for the migration of rural people to the cities. A person living in a village, after completing his education, asks for graduation, he thinks that the agricultural business is less than his dignity. It runs after white collar jobs which are only available in cities. The result is that nowadays only old people are engaged in agriculture. Their sons and daughters are looking for more attractive jobs to shift to cities.
There is no doubt that city life has its own charm. In a city, we have bungalows, multi-storey buildings, clubs, cinemas, theaters, swimming pools, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls etc. Modern amenities such as TVs, fans, refrigerators, room heaters etc. are available in the cities. . The villagers come to share the adventures of city life. Sometimes such villagers repent because they are lost in the hustle and bustle of city life.
A large part of the Indian people lives in these slums, and even lack basic amenities of life like drinking water, electricity and toilets. Hygienic conditions in slums are very bad. There are no drains and if any, then they are choke all the time. Piles of litter are found everywhere. These form the basis of the reproduction of germs.
Due to unhygienic conditions in slums, people living in the slum become easy prey for diseases such as cholera, malaria, jaundice, etc. Not only this, when the rains occur, their slums are washed away. In the event of hurricanes, the roofs of their slums are broken. They become shelterless every time.
The government is conscious of the miserable situations in which the slum dwellers live. The National Slum Development Program (NSDP) was inaugurated in August 1966. The VAMBAY and National Slum Development Program (NSDP) schemes have been included in Integrated Housing Slum Development Program (IHSDP), which was launched on December 3, 2005.
Under the VAMBAY, till 31 March 2008, Government of India subsidy of rupees. 93823.076 lakhs, 459779 housing units and 65555 toilets have been issued for construction / upgradation of seats.
The main difficulty in front of the authorities is that the alternate accommodation provided to those living in the slums is sold at the same price and they come back in slums again. They have made it a profitable business. If this fraud is underway, then the new slums will be replaced instead of the old ones. In order to prevent such fraud, the government should maintain photographs with the name and address of all slums so that the person living in a slum can get the benefit of alternate accommodation only once.
The best way to deal with the problem of slums is to prevent the employment of landless laborers in cities by providing job opportunities to such people in the villages. Different labor intensive industries can be set up in rural areas. Loans can be provided to educated graduates at concessional rates for setting up small scale industries in rural areas. Good facilities should be provided in rural areas so that people do not get admission in the lives of urban people. Once the migration stops, the slums will disappear in cities automatically.
By 2030, the estimated 5 billion populations of 8.1 billion people in the world will live in cities. After this, approximately 2 billion people will live in slums, primarily in Africa and Asia, due to lack of access to clean drinking water and toilets, which is surrounded by frustration and crime.
Essay on the Condition of People Living in Slums - 350 Words
Parts of the cities where these slums are located are quite crowded because they are more populated. In metropolitan cities, the situation of slum areas has deteriorated due to the high density of population that people there hardly enjoy basic facilities. The streets are narrow and the house has nothing except the stove of a room without the facilities of an open courtyard or an enclosure, thus depriving people of natural gifts such as sunlight and wind.
In such areas, people use normal toilets and tap water. There are not a single room in some slums, they are dense clusters of small, chronic mud clutches, of which the roofs and roofs are made of wood, gun sacks, metal or any kind of wastewater. Sometimes, 10 to 12 people live in the same room, eat and sleep. The lanes are narrow and the water of the sewage flows into open drains, which smells. Children often play at places where drains are used as open toilets.
The situation of living in many urban slums is worse than the poorest rural areas of the country. It can be held responsible for the abnormal unhealthy environment of the slum. Many serious diseases in the cities are 'environmental' because they are transmitted through air, water, soil and food or through insect or veterinarians.
The concentration of people in those areas where there is inadequate provision of water, sanitation, garbage collection and health care, creates situations where infectious and parasitic diseases develop and spread. Almost half of the slum population is suffering from one or more diseases related to inadequate provision of water and sanitation.
Despite the external presence of chaos, slum life is highly structured, many economic, religious, caste and political interests have been expressed in daily activity. The situation of living is extremely difficult, and slum dwellers have their houses in the municipality. Slum clearance 'is a threat of constant danger of bulldozing in efforts. Nonetheless, Slum Life is animated with a strong sense of Joy de Viver.
