Thriving Under the Weight of a Famous Name

Many young athletes with famous family legacies face a unique set of challenges, but Alexis Ewing has embraced her heritage. She welcomes the attention and is poised to become one of Maryland’s first high school athletes to sign a name, image, and likeness (NIL) deal. Her motivation extends beyond financial gain; she aspires to inspire others.

In her own words, Alexis says, “I just thought it would be cool to be an inspiration to other volleyball players. Like: ‘Wow, if Lexi can do it, I can do it, too. I just need to work hard enough.'” Her positive attitude and desire to motivate others are qualities that set her apart.

A Love for Volleyball

Contrary to what some might expect, Alexis was never pressured into following in her father’s footsteps on the basketball court. She explored various sports, including tennis, but she longed for a more pronounced team dynamic. At the age of 12, her life changed when she picked up a volleyball. She describes it as “love at first sight.” At 15 years old and towering at 6 feet 3 inches, she excels as an outside hitter for both her high school team and VA Juniors. Her talent has garnered recognition from PrepVolleyball.com, ranking her among the top 100 players for the Class of 2025. Furthermore, she has received not one but two invitations to Team USA’s national training development program.

Strong Family Support

Alexis’s parents have played a significant role in her journey. Her father, Patrick Ewing, an 11-time NBA All-Star and former Georgetown Hoyas player, attends as many of her games as possible, demonstrating his pride in her accomplishments. In his own words, “She’s just hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of her potential, and I’m just looking forward to seeing the finished product.”

On the other hand, Cheryl Weaver, Alexis’s mother, doesn’t sit in the stands. She’s the coach at Bullis and can be found pacing the sideline during the season. Weaver herself was a volleyball standout and continued her volleyball career at Long Beach State, even playing professionally in Azerbaijan. Her unwavering support, both as a mother and a coach, is invaluable to Alexis’s journey.

Embracing the New Era of Sports

One significant change in the sports world is the opportunity for student-athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). This was a dream that Alexis was already pursuing even before the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) approved it.

When the chance for an NIL deal arose, Cheryl Weaver explored various opportunities. She thought of Nick Friedman, co-founder of College Hunks Hauling Junk, a company that had already made headlines in the NIL space by signing University of Miami quarterback D’Eriq King. Cheryl saw this as a golden opportunity for Alexis to become a trailblazer. By signing with College Hunks Hauling Junk, Alexis became the first female high school volleyball athlete to secure such a deal.

Overcoming Challenges

Securing an NIL deal was not without its obstacles. Initially, MPSSAA rules prevented Alexis from signing such a deal without jeopardizing her eligibility. Alexis expressed her disappointment, saying, “I was really let down, wondering why these other states allow it but not Maryland. I was a little confused. It didn’t really feel fair that other places could get it, but I couldn’t.”

However, change was on the horizon. On December 7, the MPSSAA became the 24th state organization to pass a measure allowing athletes to financially benefit from endorsements, social media presence, advertisements, and NFTs. This shift opened doors for young talents like Alexis to explore new opportunities.

A Stepping Stone to the Future

The deal with College Hunks Hauling Junk is not just about monetary gain; it’s a stepping stone for Alexis to build her resume and open doors to bigger opportunities. It’s a chance for her to adopt a business mindset as she progresses through high school and begins to explore entrepreneurial avenues for shaping her image in college and beyond.

The moving company plans to spotlight Alexis in a promotional video, showcasing her spiking a volleyball into one of their iconic orange trucks. They also seek opportunities for Alexis to make appearances at local events, further boosting her image and inspiring young girls aspiring to play volleyball at a high level.

An Inspiration to Many

Alexis Ewing understands the weight of her family’s legacy but doesn’t let it deter her. Instead, she uses it as motivation to make her parents proud. She’s determined to leave her mark on volleyball and continue her journey, embracing the opportunities that come her way.

Above all, Alexis Ewing’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, talent, and family support. Her last name may come with great expectations, but she’s carving her path in the world of sports, especially in high school volleyball, with grace, humility, and a drive to inspire the next generation of athletes. In the end, Alexis Ewing isn’t just about her height; she’s a symbol of determination and inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere.
