Baba Maharaj Satarkar, originally named Neelkanth Dnyaneshwar Gore, was born in Satara on February 5, 1936. His father, Dnyaneshwar Dadamaharaj Gore, was an enthusiast of horsemanship, while his mother, Matoshree Lakshmi Bai Dnyaneshwar Gore, was a devout follower of saintly literature. Baba Maharaj received his early education up to grade C, after which he pursued postgraduate studies in law. His family had a 135-year-old legacy within the Varkari sect, and Babamaharaj Satarkar continued the tradition of kirtan and preaching that had been passed down for three generations.

To further enrich his knowledge and skills, Babamaharaj Satarkar sought guidance from young Appamaharaj and Annamaharaj. He began singing Shri Sadhguru Dadamaharaj’s Kirtanat Abhangachya Chali at the tender age of eight and commenced his formal training in classical singing at eleven under the tutelage of Latafat Hussain Khan Saheb Purohitbuwa of the Agra Gharana.

On October 27, 2023, the legendary kirtankar Baba Maharaj Satarkar passed away at the age of 89. His final rites were conducted at Nerul, Navi Mumbai, on the same day at 5 p.m. The state of Maharashtra mourned the loss of this iconic spiritual leader, with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extending his condolences on Baba Maharaj’s passing.

He was honored with the ‘Mr.’ award in 1983 and played a pivotal role in establishing the ‘Chaitanya Spiritual Knowledge Propagation Society,’ which provided free medical services and medications to 60 to 70 thousand followers.
