The dictionary defines nationalism as a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries. Nationalism creates a psychological bond of loyalty and love between the citizens and the motherland Nationalism in India dates back to the ancient period when the loyalty towards the king was considered as a form of nationalism. However, in the ancient and medieval rimes, India was more of regionalism. The presence of the small provinces led to the overshadowing of regionalism over nationalism. The British rule in India strengthened the spirit of nationalism in India.
This was evident from the nationalist movements such as sepoy mutiny, formation of Indian National Congress, Civil Disobedience, Quit India Movement and Dandi Satyagraha which were held during the pre independence era Subhash Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Swami Vivekananda, and Mahatma Gandhi were some of the national leaders who contributed to the strengthening of the feeling of Nationalism among the masses. The post independence era witnessed a concrete form of Nationalism. The Constitution of India, the National Anthem, patriotic songs, the national emblem and the national festivals strengthened the spirit of patriotism and nationalism m the Indians. However, in the past few years the religious, cultural, ethnic and social conflicts have resulted in fragmented nationalism. The core values of democracy have taken a back seat and individualism has replaced the power of unity. The people of the country are seeking for new and independent identity on the basis of their culture, caste, and religion. In the recent past, for the last couple of years, the Indian nationalism has been suffocated under an immense pressure. Some vested and interested leaders are trying hard to redefine or rewrite it with strings and attachments that pull it away from the spirit of constitutional understanding of extreme loyalty with no tags of religious, ethnic, linguistic or cultural discrimination. This is quite evident from the recent violence and uprising witnessed across the university campuses that were witnessed due to the dashes in the ideologies of the student wings of the political parties. These incidents have been criticised by the people from the different sections of the society. Such incidents emphasises on the need to revisit the redefined and revamped Indian nationalism.
Nationalism cannot be pushed into someone's psyche and soul, but evolves within a civilised human being once he finds the real nation and nationals around him. If we define and interpret nationalism on the lines •and patterns of religion, cast, colour and creed then it is not nationalism, but sectarian nationality with true nationalism on the back-burner. Nationalism coexists and blends well with democracy and in democracy 'majority is always authority', but if some establishments try to hijack the concept of majority dictate their own agenda, which makes the whole concept of democracy and nationalism becomes irrelevant and farce.
Indian nationalism, and for that matter nationalism throughout the world is not so fragile that it requires strengthening by sloganeering in a particular language or dialect or something that will become weak with changing dietary habits of its followers. The repetitive attempts by some socio-political sects to rewrite nationalism with a plan to suit their own agenda will yield nothing but more hatred, which is an antagonist to true nationalism. India and its progressive, peace loving people cannot afford such divisive hatred which hampers the rapid growth of nation. So, it becomes the duty of the whole country to stand together and make all the forces understand the Constitution in the right perspective.
The people of India and its leaders should define the true meaning of nationalism in the context of the Constitution and democracy. Any attempt to redefine or rewrite nationalism to the satisfaction of certain disgruntled elements will prove counterproductive not only for the harmony within the country but for its democratic image as well. Indian democracy with enormous people's participation is considered one of the most vibrant democracies; particularly 1n the subcontinent, it has its own standing. It becomes imperative for people of India and its leaders to be steadfast in making it a glorious democracy where there will be no discrimination and different benchmarks of nationalism for different people.
