DENSITY OF POPULATION IN INDIA
There was 273 people per sq km as against 216 in 1981 an increase of 57 persons per sq km, during the last decade. In 1901, it was 77 persons per sq km and 117 in 1951. The density is the highest in. the Union Territory of Delhi (Delhi is now a National Capital Territory, a virtual state since 1993), followed by the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Pondicherry and Daman & Diu. Among the States, density is the highest in West Bengal, followed by Kerala, reversing the trend observed in 1981. This is because of the high growth rate of population in West Bengal and the low growth rate of population in Kerala.
