History and Importance - Writing & Skills

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the oldest graduates of the newly established Calcutta University. After BA, he was working as a Civil Executive in the British Government and then he became a District Magistrate and then District Collector. Chattopadhyay was very much interested in the Indian Independence Campaign and we see his important role in the 1857 Sasiasan movement.

At the same time, the administration was trying to promote "God Save the Queen" but Indians did not like it. It is said that the idea of composition of Vande Mataram came in the mind of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, in 1876, while on the post of Government Official. In the Chinsurah, on the bank of the Hooghly river, he made Vande Mataram in the family's white home.

Bankim Chandra had his work in the time of Indian Independence Campaign. They first composed it using Sanskrit and Bengali words. Chattopadhyay published his poem in Anandamath. He published it in 1882 in the time of the ascetic revolt. Jadunath later asked him about giving music to this poem.

Appointment as National Song -

Tagore's Jan Gun Mann was acknowledged as the national anthem only after India's independence in 1947. The Muslim brothers in Vande Mataram have refused to adopt by saying that Muslims would accept only Allah. According to Muslims, due to Vande Mataram being taken from an anti-Muslim book, Anandamath, they refused to accept it.

Before independence, in 1937, Vande Mataram was considered to be considered as the national anthem. But according to Indian National Congress this song was quite long. That is why he adopted the first two verses of this song as the national song, in which his love and beauty was mentioned for the motherland.

In the other verses, the motherland is considered as God and it has been compared to Lord Goddess Durga. But then Indian National Congress adopted its first verse as the national song.

But after the refusal of Rabindranath Tagore then this dispute went further, as he said that we wanted a song which reflects the unity of all the communities. In a letter to Subhash Chandra Bose, Tagore also wrote that:

The main part of Vande Mataram is the song of Goddess Durga: and it is certainly not a debate over it. It is true that Bankim Chandra has also considered Durga as a symbol of unity, but no Muslim would like to worship 10 Hindu Goddesses.

This year (1937) a number of publishers have given special significance to Durga in Vande Mataram. Muslime believes that Anandmath is a anti-Muslim novel. I believe this is only a literary work. I believe that the Parliament has all the people of religion and caste together and it will not be right to play such a song there. When Bengali Muslims are stubborn about religion, then we should consider it as unbearable.

After this, in the letter of this letter, Tagore said that:

The Bengali Hindu is getting excited about this incident but the excitement is not happening to the Hindus only. Both Hindus and Muslims are strong, therefore our decision should be balanced. In order to achieve our political goal, we want peace, unity and people together - we never want a war of never ending.

Public response--

Muslim viewpoint - Why Muslim Oppose Vande Mataram

Many Muslim organizations in India had issued a fatwa to not sing Vande Mataram. Because of the mention of Bharat Mata in Vande Mataram, the Muslims wanted to avoid it.

According to Muslim institutions, Vande Mataram is harmful to Muslims. That is why many Muslim people and Muslim organizations also oppose it after becoming the national anthem of India. For this he also told many religious reasons. But some Muslim brothers adopted Vande Mataram as national anthem, sang and even praised it.

The union minister of the Rajiv Gandhi government, Arif Mohammad Khan, also wrote the Urdu translation of this song, which started with Taslimat and Man Taslimat.

All India Sunni Ulema Board issued a fatwa on September 6, 2006, requesting all Muslims to sing the first two verses of Muslim Vande Mataram. Board President Maulana Mufti Syed Shah Badruddin Qadri Aljilani had said, "If you bow down to your mother and pray to her, then what is its badness, but its meaning is from respecting it."

Shiya scholar and Vice-President of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq on September 5, 2006 said that scholars should check Vande Mataram well. He asked, "Vande Mataram is by greeting or by worshiping God?"

In 2013, Muslim MP Shafikur Rahman Burq, when the song was going on in the Lok Sabha instead of leaving the Lok Sabha, went away from the Lok Sabha, despite his beginnings in Muslim, he did not respect it.

Sikh People View - Sikh View On Vande Mataram

The Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC), representing the Sikh sect, had prayed to the Sikhs that Sikhs did not sing Vande Mataram in schools and institutions. SGPC's chief avatar Singh Makkar said,

"Choosing a song for a national song in which only one religion will be propagated, surely it will be sad for the other religions."

The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee also refused to sing Vande Mataram because according to him the Sikhs sing "syrup da bhala".

Rajendra Prasad, who was the President of the Electoral Assembly on January 24, 1950, had given his final decision by giving the following statement:

... The art of genocide combined with the words and music will be the national anthem of our country, and the song Vande Mataram, which plays an important role in the Indian Independence Campaign, will be given as much respect and importance as gun guns and Vande Mataram will be the national anthem of our India. I hope all members agree with my decision.
 Electoral Assembly of India, Vol. XII, 24-1-1950
