There are many people in our countries who make our villages ideal. Gandhiji was one of them. Rabindranath was also curious for the peaceful rural areas. During the non-cooperation days, there was a great cry - 'Beck for the villages'. And yet some of us today want to be a permanent resident in a village. We do not want to be in the back-water of the previous ages. No one, for a moment, will reduce peace, even the beauty of the green fields or the poem, the blue sky is found in the village. The city and the Adarsh village are not the place where most of the work is done today.

The villages, of course, can not be eliminated. We will have villages where clay tilers stay in close contact with the earth; Today's villages can not be like the villages of the past. They have to do urbanization. They must have something between the village and the green corn fields between a city.

The first step towards this urbanization is to bring electricity to every cottage. A light night would mean the expansion of the day and therefore, there would be more work and entertainment. Fortunately, our hydroelectric multipurpose schemes of Bhakra Nangal, Damodar, Hirkund and Tungabhadra have the power of electricity in remote villages on a large scale. Actually all the villages of Punjab have been electrified. In some other states, electricity has also traveled in the inner village.

Large scale farming with mechanized solution will result in a huge increase in production and hence rural prosperity will increase. Electric motor will pump water from rivers and deep tube wells to irrigate the land. Likewise, dairy and poultry farming is increasing in villages like Bali and Hinghaha in West Bengal.

Rural economy is dependent on agriculture, which is supported by small scale and cottage industries. The artisan's importance is rarely explained to the craftsman. The ambitious project to develop a cottage industry on Japanese model can do something to change the attitude of our villages.

A modern village will have the scope of several new industries. In the future villages of my dream, there will be all the amenities of the city without the lives of the crowd. There is nothing except a solid forest for a city today. In many states the villages have been brought under Panchayat system. Now they are hoping to be prosperous and thrilled with the new life, the speed of the villagers is increasing rapidly.
